SUMMARY:Body and Soul with live score by DJ Spooky + Audio Description
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Oscar Micheaux\nRUN TIME: 1 hour 33 min\nPRE-SHOW: Robert & Billie short film by Robert Brogden\nMID-SHOW: Short Film Q&A and DJ Spooky Introduction \nDJ Spooky performs an original live score created for this masterpiece of the silent screen era\, written\, directed\, and produced by prolific director Oscar Micheaux! \nThis event will feature live audio description by Audio-Reader Network.\nPresented in partnership with KJHK. \nABOUT THE FILM:\nIn this good versus bad twin melodrama\, Robeson plays both an escaped convict posing as a minister\, and the convict’s honest\, yet penniless brother. A true pioneer\, Micheaux and his films answered the challenges of racial segregation and provided black moviegoers with an alternative to the mainstream films being produced by a segregated Hollywood. It is estimated that Micheaux\, who was the first African American to produce a feature length film\, wrote\, produced\, and directed more than 40 films from 1919 to 1948. His movies\, known as “race” films\, were made by Black filmmakers\, featured an all-Black cast\, and were intended for Black audiences. Regarded as a rare work in African American cinematic history\, Body and Soul boasts biting social commentary on issues of race and gender that went unaddressed by Hollywood for decades\, and that still resonate today.  \n\nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nPaul D. Miller\, aka DJ Spooky\, is a composer\, multimedia artist\, and writer whose work immerses audiences in a blend of genres\, global culture\, and environmental and social issues. Miller has collaborated with an array of recording artists\, including Metallica\, Chuck D\, Steve Reich\, and Yoko Ono. His 2018 album\, DJ Spooky Presents: Phantom Dancehall\, debuted at #3 on Billboard Reggae. His large-scale\, multimedia performance pieces include “Rebirth of a Nation\,” Terra Nova: Sinfonia Antarctica\, commissioned by the Brooklyn Academy of Music\, and Seoul Counterpoint\, written during his 2014 residency at Seoul Institute of the Arts. His multimedia project Sonic Web premiered at San Francisco’s Internet Archive in 2019. He was the inaugural artist-in-residency at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s The Met Reframed\, 2012-2013. \nABOUT THE SHORT:\nRobert and Billie\nA generational love story set in the historic town of Nicodemus\, Kansas\, the only remaining western settlement founded by formerly enslaved Black Americans following the Civil War.
