He began his music career in his early teens\, writing and recording and performing in bands such as Vitreous Humor\, The Regrets\, and The Danny Pound Band. Music is his calling. \nA slice of  Ginger Pie from our friends at Ladybird Diner included in ticket price!  \n50% off admission for Free State Film Society members with advance registration. \nClick here to learn more about the Free State Film Society! \nThe Lawrence Arts Center’s Microfilm Series is supported in part by the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission\, which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts\, a federal agency. \nABOUT THE FILM \nWorking from a script by Colin Higgins\, director Hal Ashby tells the story of the emotional and romantic bond between a death-obsessed young man (Bud Cort) from a wealthy family and a devil-may-care\, bohemian octogenarian (Ruth Gordon). Equal parts gallows humor and romantic innocence\, Harold and Maude dissolves the line between darkness and light along with the ones that separate people by class\, gender\, and age\, and it features indelible performances and a remarkable soundtrack by Cat Stevens.

SUMMARY:Choices Short Film Screening + Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a screening of the brand new short film Choices currently touring Kansas through a partnership between Free State Festival and Reprofilm. The 17 minute film will be followed by a discussion with filmmaker Jess Jacobs and community panelists moderated by Women of Lawrence Film co-founder Laura Kirk. \nThis film will be shown in the Lawrence Arts Center’s large gallery in conjunction with the current exhibition\, Making it Work. \nPre-registration is not required. All are welcome for an engaging evening of film and conversation. Cash bar will be available. \nABOUT THE FILM \nAn unexpected pregnancy forces 27-year-old Zazie Clarke to make a choice… or in this case\, both choices.  In parallel universes\, Zazie’s decisions to become a mother and to have an abortion force her to finally face adulthood\, finding vulnerability and a deeper connection to the women in her life than she ever knew was possible. (2022\, 17 min)\nThe film stars Jess Jacobs\, Paige Gilbert and Alysia Reiner \nDIRECTOR’S STATEMENT \nChoices is part of the evolving conversation of women (and assigned female at birth people) finding autonomy against a backdrop of misogyny\, misinformation\, and the politicization of feminine bodies. Zazie is specific\, yet universal. Her choice is simple but enormous. This decision goes far beyond a reproductive future; it’s a metaphor for the impossible choices we have to make daily\, regardless of pregnancy or not. As a filmmaker\, I’m interested in unlikely protagonists who are thrust into action and find themselves on the cusp of personal awakening. The pulse and constraint of Choices poses an exciting opportunity to educate without being prescriptive. I want to show Zazie’s struggle in fastidious detail to create understanding and empathy. So much of the abortion conversation is rooted in emotionally charged political referendums and religious ideology. I want to show a different side of that conversation through the details of reproductive health\, the consequences of each decision\, and the human experience of both. At the end of the film\, we’re confronted with the reality that Zazie could hold lingering doubt. To me\, that’s the beautiful and nuanced plight of choice and the heartbeat of this film.\n– Erica Rose

SUMMARY:Film Screening: Artist and Mother
DESCRIPTION:Is motherhood the last taboo left in contemporary art? The documentary Artist and Mother features four rising artists who dare to make their own experience of motherhood a part of their work: Rebecca Campbell\, Andrea Chung\, Tanya Aguiñiga\, and Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle. Not only do they juggle career and family like so many today\, but they’ve also found inspiring ways to use the materials or images of motherhood in their art. Curators and scholars weigh in on the larger art-market dynamics and gender biases at stake\, flipping the script that devalues women’s creativity. \nAfter the film\, there will be a community panel discussion with local artists Mona Cliff\, Connie Fiorella Fitzpatrick\, Molly Frances Murphy and Heidi Gluck about how they balance motherhood with their artistic endeavors. \nThis screening is FREE and made possible from KCET as part of the Making it Work exhibition currently on display at the Lawrence Arts Center. Advance registration is not required. \nArtist and Mother will be preceded by the short film I Hope You Know made through the Zinn Writing Project!

Known for his elaborate and ceremonious sensory concert experiences that merge jazz and electronic influences\, Calvin believes the art is in crafting the perfect moment. His music is best served live\, with sensational performances and high fashion. Arsenia’s energy and curated environments fill the often intimate spaces he performs in. Brought into 9 countries through public and private grants in less than a decade\, Arsenia builds a scene for his audience and for himself\, packed with beauty and lasting delight. \nMaya Deren \nFilm selections: At Land\, Meshes of the Afternoon\, Ritual in Transfigured Time\, The Very Eye of Night. \nDeren is one of the most important American experimental filmmakers and entrepreneurial promoters of the avant-garde from the 1940s and 50s. Deren was also a choreographer\, dancer\, film theorist\, poet\, lecturer\, writer and photographer. The function of film\, Deren believed\, was to create an experience. Each one of her films would evoke new conclusions\, lending her focus to be dynamic and always-evolving. She combined her interests in dance\, Haitian Vodou and subjective psychology in a series of surreal\, perceptual\, black and white short films. Using editing\, multiple exposures\, jump cutting\, superimposition\, slow-motion and other camera techniques to her fullest advantage\, Deren creates continued motion through discontinued space\, while abandoning the established notions of physical space and time\, with the ability to turn her vision into a stream of consciousness.

SUMMARY:A Reckoning In Boston - Virtual Screening & Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual screening of the brand new award-winning documentary film A Reckoning in Boston on November 20 followed by a filmmaker panel discussion.\n\nThis virtual screening is FREE for Free State Film Society subscribers.\nClick here to join the society! \nClick here to buy a virtual ticket to A Reckoning in Boston + Q&A\n\nABOUT THE FILM\n\nIn the fall of 2014\, Kafi Dixon and Carl Chandler enrolled in a rigorous night course in the humanities at a community center in their Boston neighborhood of Dorchester. Kafi\, 44\, sharp\, witty and restless\, dropped out of school at 15. She dreams of starting a land cooperative in Boston for women of color who have experienced trauma and disenfranchisement. Carl\, 65\, a community elder and doting grandfather\, is the class’s intellectual leader. White suburban filmmaker James Rutenbeck comes to Dorchester to document the students’ engagement with their course\, but as he is awakened to the violence\, racism and gentrification that threaten their place in the city\, he is forced to come to terms with his flawed film premise and his own complicity in racist structures. Spending more time listening than filming\, James enlists Kafi and Carl as producers of the film. Five years on\, despite many personal obstacles\, Kafi and Carl arrive at surprising new places in their lives\, and\, following their lead\, James does too. Bringing to light the foundations of systemic racism in one community that has spanned generations\, A Reckoning in Boston shows that transformation\, healing and social change begins within each of us.\n  \n“Don’t miss this powerful film that lays bare the transformative force of the humanities in our lives in these turbulent and troubling times!”\n– Cornel West

En route\, she is haunted by a bizarre apparition that compels her toward an abandoned lakeside pavilion. Made by industrial filmmakers on a small budget\, the eerily effective B-movie classic Carnival of Souls was intended to have “the look of a Bergman and the feel of a Cocteau”—and\, with its strikingly used locations and spooky organ score\, it succeeds. Herk Harvey’s macabre masterpiece gained a cult following on late-night television and continues to inspire filmmakers today. \n

Philosophers often ruin our favorite films by pointing out a film’s logical inconsistencies\, ethical dilemmas\, and operating assumptions about human nature (among others). Hoping to channel this enduring aspect of doing philosophy\, this series hopes to introduce philosophical topics by ruining your favorite films.

SUMMARY:MUSIC // After Party with JC Brooks Band
DESCRIPTION:“JC Brooks looks and performs like a cross between Chuck Berry and H.R. of Bad Brains in their primes\, but his skintight R&B and post-punk soul upend expectations of a retro act.”– Washington Post\n\nErupting with raw emotion\, JC Brooks unleashes his soulful shouts and heart wrenching falsetto over the relentless rhythm of guitarist Alec Lehrman\, drummer Kevin Marks\, bassist Theodore Berry IV\, keyboardist Jeremy Tromberg and percussionist-extraordinaire\, JoVia Armstrong. It’s live\, it’s compelling\, it’s now\, it’s theatrical. So theatrical\, in fact\, that they were tapped to star in the critically-acclaimed run of the Tony Award-winning musical “Passing Strange” at the Chicago Center for the Performing Arts.
