SUMMARY:ART OPENINGS: Tonja Torgerson & Ashlyn Pope
DESCRIPTION:Tonja Torgerson: Succumb\nCider Gallery (810 Pennsylvania St.)\nTonja Torgerson\nAs part of her project-based residency at the Lawrence Arts Center\, Torgerson uses prints\, cut paper\, and collage to create a fallen Garden of Eden in which life-size figures grapple with the recognition of their mortality. These works provide an intimate pause in which to consider the frailty of the body\, allowing us to dwell on uncomfortable truths. \nTorgerson’s exhibit will be open to the public starting Friday\, June 25\, but attendees of the festival’s One Reel Under the Stars short film program can get a sneak peek of her process and progress on Wednesday\, June 23! \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAshlyn Pope: Witnessing Dandelions\nLawrence Arts Center (940 New Hampshire St.)\n \n  \nAshlyn Pope’s work is a reflection not only of her own experience\, but also an expression of her history. Pope has spent her time in residency at the Arts Center exploring themes of her ancestry and symbolism\, and how to relay that information through her ceramics. Working in both hand-building and throwing\, she uses her art to champion diversity through a body of work that discusses her own Gullah history\, as well as the past and present of the Black community. While Pope works in a variety of mediums\, she truly enjoys the challenges of working in clay\, “having to take the time to become acquainted and learn to work together with the clay\, and become a partner in its formation.” \nAlso on display at the Lawrence Arts Center…\nExperimental Film Showcase + Midden sculpture by Adriana Gramly \nAaron Hughes | Poetry Despite/Music Despite Eternal War Requiem

SUMMARY:Experimental Film Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Screening venue: Lawrence Arts Center (940 New Hampshire St.)\nFilms will be screened on a loop in the Lawrence Arts Center’s front gallery for the entire week of the Free State Festival. Please come and go at your leisure (masks required).\n  \nMidden – Adriana Gramly (4 minutes)\nScraps and trash are brought together through animation to realize hidden potential. \n* Midden will be accompanied by a 3D sculptural art installation  \nArtist Statement:  \nMy home has hardly changed\, as far as appearances\, in the twenty years we’ve lived there. Well except for the twenty years worth of collected junk. I now am separated enough to appreciate\, not cringe\, at its eccentricities. The opossum coming through the window was no longer embarrassing\, nor the stray cats snakes\, and raccoons. And now the packrat in the side-room comically chews up my dad’s collection of wires\, beads\, and clothes\, finding pieces for its own nest\, or midden. \nIn retaining my dad’s spirit to create my own hoarder’s nest\, I collected and made things that I was attracted to\, and found their purpose as I went. By bringing all of these scraps and trash together in an animation\, I’m realizing their potential in a way that my dad has never seemed to manage with his own treasures. \n  \nThe View – Elizabeth Stehling (7 minutes)\nHypnotic\, transient realities continuously fracture with frames of majestic landscapes. As the sands flow and seconds pass\, two women fall deeper into a disorienting new space of lost time. \nRiptide Rhapsody – Kenton Brett and David Jarred (7 minutes)\nFive furry\, fluffy and feathered friends are swept out to sea and into an amazing adventure. They encounter sea monsters\, robots\, and mutants in this stylistically inventive and hand-made animation. \n

SUMMARY:ART // Synthesizer Performance. Luke DuBois
DESCRIPTION:Using the Lawrence Public Library’s custom modular analog synthesizer\, avant-garde electronic performer Luke DuBois will perform live.  This performance will be a unique opportunity for the community to see this instrument being used. The modular synthesizer is a type of synthesizer\, which exists in both physical and virtual forms\, consisting of separate specialized modules. The specialization is usually in the module being designed to allow the modification or processing a signal\, such as the frequency (oscillator)\, spectrum (filter)\, or amplitude (amplifier). The modules are not hardwired together but are connected together with patch cords\, a matrix patching system\, or switches to create a patch.

SUMMARY:ART // Johanna Winters: The Middle Tell
DESCRIPTION:The Middle Tell is a shadow-puppet performance created by Johanna Winters chronicling a trio of female bards as they reluctantly surrender to a deteriorating condition. These middle women reveal their story through a muted language of hinging limbs and dousing light. Suspended in a time that is both passing and returning\, sustaining and releasing\, the middle women hover in a state of hesitation between undoing their youth and summoning the process of aging. They are neither bitter nor tolerant of their inevitable decline – they tepidly hinge against and toward it. \nPuppeteering assistance from Olivia Hernández\, Alicia Kelly\, and Anne Luben. Music and sound design by Jeff Stolz.\n\n\nJohanna Winters\n\nJohanna Winters is the current Printmaking Artist-in-Residence at the Lawrence Arts Center. Johanna received her MFA from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville\, and was the 2017-18 recipient of the University of Tennessee College of Arts and Sciences Thomas Fellowship. She has taught printmaking as an Associate Lecturer at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay\, and recently completed a residency at the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław\, Poland. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.

SUMMARY:ART // Flower Matrix. Claudia Hart
DESCRIPTION:Hart’s decorative patterns are in fact also computer codes – augmented “tags” functioning like QR – that permit users to see her fantastical animations embedded in them through Hart’s Looking Glass augmented app. Through the Looking Glass\, one can glimpse a world of pulsing invisible flowers covered with animated graphics culled from Internet signage\, computer code\, and emoji graphics. Programmed by the artist\, her multimedia craft objects are metaphors that unfold\, using computer-vision to reveal “magical” layers of new information. \nWallpaper and ceramic tiles were specifically created as décor for a new kind of “virtual-reality” lounge\, a seductive environment made for viewing Hart’s Flower Matrix VR world. She is building another liminal space\, but this one in the real world where one might don VR goggles and view her parallel VR one: a mixed reality fantastical architecture that randomly grows and decays using an esthetic of fakeness where technology has replaced nature\, both sugary sweet and chemically toxic in equal measures. \nArtwork courtesy of bitforms gallery\, NYC
