SUMMARY:Virtual Short Film Screening + Q&A: Now What?
DESCRIPTION:Free State Festival presents a virtual screening of the new short film\, Now What? followed by a Q&A with the creative team on Facebook LIVE. \nABOUT THE FILM: As social media floods with adult-driven information\, misinformation\, opinions\, and witness recorded killings; it begs the question – How are the youth digesting these times? Jamal experiences watching a Black man murdered for the first time. In result he grapples with what his identity means in a polarized society. \nNow What? was created in response to the turmoil felt as the world witnesses the habitual police killings of unarmed people of color. Created by Marcus Guider\, DeVonte Brown\, and La’Ron Cooper\, the short film explores the psychological effect that these murders have on children. As social media floods with adult-driven information\, misinformation\, opinions\, and witness recorded killings; it begs the question – How are the youth digesting these times? Jamal\, the film’s young black protagonist\, experiences watching a Black man murdered for the first time. In result he grapples with what his identity means in a polarized society. Through the story\, the filmmakers aim to create cross-cultural empathy in a time when it’s needed the most. \n* This film contains firearms and subject matter that may be disturbing to some audience members. Viewer discretion is advised.

SUMMARY:Experimental Film Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Screening venue: Lawrence Arts Center (940 New Hampshire St.)\nFilms will be screened on a loop in the Lawrence Arts Center’s front gallery for the entire week of the Free State Festival. Please come and go at your leisure (masks required).\n  \nMidden – Adriana Gramly (4 minutes)\nScraps and trash are brought together through animation to realize hidden potential. \n* Midden will be accompanied by a 3D sculptural art installation  \nArtist Statement:  \nMy home has hardly changed\, as far as appearances\, in the twenty years we’ve lived there. Well except for the twenty years worth of collected junk. I now am separated enough to appreciate\, not cringe\, at its eccentricities. The opossum coming through the window was no longer embarrassing\, nor the stray cats snakes\, and raccoons. And now the packrat in the side-room comically chews up my dad’s collection of wires\, beads\, and clothes\, finding pieces for its own nest\, or midden. \nIn retaining my dad’s spirit to create my own hoarder’s nest\, I collected and made things that I was attracted to\, and found their purpose as I went. By bringing all of these scraps and trash together in an animation\, I’m realizing their potential in a way that my dad has never seemed to manage with his own treasures. \n  \nThe View – Elizabeth Stehling (7 minutes)\nHypnotic\, transient realities continuously fracture with frames of majestic landscapes. As the sands flow and seconds pass\, two women fall deeper into a disorienting new space of lost time. \nRiptide Rhapsody – Kenton Brett and David Jarred (7 minutes)\nFive furry\, fluffy and feathered friends are swept out to sea and into an amazing adventure. They encounter sea monsters\, robots\, and mutants in this stylistically inventive and hand-made animation. \n

SUMMARY:ART OPENINGS: Tonja Torgerson & Ashlyn Pope
DESCRIPTION:Tonja Torgerson: Succumb\nCider Gallery (810 Pennsylvania St.)\nTonja Torgerson\nAs part of her project-based residency at the Lawrence Arts Center\, Torgerson uses prints\, cut paper\, and collage to create a fallen Garden of Eden in which life-size figures grapple with the recognition of their mortality. These works provide an intimate pause in which to consider the frailty of the body\, allowing us to dwell on uncomfortable truths. \nTorgerson’s exhibit will be open to the public starting Friday\, June 25\, but attendees of the festival’s One Reel Under the Stars short film program can get a sneak peek of her process and progress on Wednesday\, June 23! \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAshlyn Pope: Witnessing Dandelions\nLawrence Arts Center (940 New Hampshire St.)\n \n  \nAshlyn Pope’s work is a reflection not only of her own experience\, but also an expression of her history. Pope has spent her time in residency at the Arts Center exploring themes of her ancestry and symbolism\, and how to relay that information through her ceramics. Working in both hand-building and throwing\, she uses her art to champion diversity through a body of work that discusses her own Gullah history\, as well as the past and present of the Black community. While Pope works in a variety of mediums\, she truly enjoys the challenges of working in clay\, “having to take the time to become acquainted and learn to work together with the clay\, and become a partner in its formation.” \nAlso on display at the Lawrence Arts Center…\nExperimental Film Showcase + Midden sculpture by Adriana Gramly \nAaron Hughes | Poetry Despite/Music Despite Eternal War Requiem

SUMMARY:Philosophers at the Cinema Podcast: Hairspray
DESCRIPTION:Lawrence Talks presents an all new podcast\, Philosophers at the Cinema! In this very special Free State Festival edition\, host David Tamez is joined by Kansas City film critic Lonita Cook for a deep dive into John Waters’ Hairspray and an exploration into the philosophical ponderings of the movie-going experience. \nEnjoy this podcast episode before the film screening of Hairspray\, during your drive home from the cinema\, or after sleeping in the next morning over a fine cup of coffee. \n  \n \nPhilosophers at the Cinema Series Summary:\n\nThis series focuses on the timeless tendency for philosophers to ruin films held favorably by the general public. Philosophers often ruin our favorite films by pointing out a film’s logical inconsistencies\, ethical dilemmas\, and operating assumptions about human nature (among others). Hoping to channel this enduring aspect of doing philosophy\, this series hopes to introduce philosophical topics by ruining your favorite films.

In this film\, Chaplin appears in his iconic role of The Little Tramp who is coming to America to seek his fortune. However\, The Tramp’s sea voyage and ultimate arrival in the U.S. are filled with misadventure\, satire\, and romance.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nUn Chien Andalou (An Andalusian Dog)\nDirector: Luis Buñuel\nNarrative short.\nRunning time: 21 minutes\nLIVE Audio Description by Audio-Reader \nFrench presentation by KU Department of French\, Francophone & Italian\nLIVE music by Alex Kimball Williams & Mike Quillin\nWith its iconic and jarring imagery\, Un Chien Andalou is an unforgettable surrealist classic from 1929 that is still shown in film classrooms and festivals around the world today. Luis Buñuel and Salvador Dalí teamed up to create the bizarre and unnerving sequences that make up this short film\, including the most widely remembered: the slicing open of a woman’s eye. \n  \n\nPre-show experience: \nWhile you wait for the films to begin\, whet your palate with Spencer Projects\, a series of popup projections that beam works of art from the Spencer Museum’s collection into the community. This Free State Festival edition features works prompted by these two films and explores the immigrant experience\, romance\, dreams\, dislocation\, and free association. \nAlso\, pick up a free Spencer Museum Art Cart Kit to make your own zoetrope\, an early animation toy that creates the illusion of motion\, then write a 6-word poem to describe your animation. En route\, she is haunted by a bizarre apparition that compels her toward an abandoned lakeside pavilion. Made by industrial filmmakers on a small budget\, the eerily effective B-movie classic Carnival of Souls was intended to have “the look of a Bergman and the feel of a Cocteau”—and\, with its strikingly used locations and spooky organ score\, it succeeds. Herk Harvey’s macabre masterpiece gained a cult following on late-night television and continues to inspire filmmakers today. \n

SUMMARY:A Reckoning In Boston - Virtual Screening & Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a virtual screening of the brand new award-winning documentary film A Reckoning in Boston on November 20 followed by a filmmaker panel discussion.\n\nThis virtual screening is FREE for Free State Film Society subscribers.\nClick here to join the society! \nClick here to buy a virtual ticket to A Reckoning in Boston + Q&A\n\nABOUT THE FILM\n\nIn the fall of 2014\, Kafi Dixon and Carl Chandler enrolled in a rigorous night course in the humanities at a community center in their Boston neighborhood of Dorchester. Kafi\, 44\, sharp\, witty and restless\, dropped out of school at 15. She dreams of starting a land cooperative in Boston for women of color who have experienced trauma and disenfranchisement. Carl\, 65\, a community elder and doting grandfather\, is the class’s intellectual leader. White suburban filmmaker James Rutenbeck comes to Dorchester to document the students’ engagement with their course\, but as he is awakened to the violence\, racism and gentrification that threaten their place in the city\, he is forced to come to terms with his flawed film premise and his own complicity in racist structures. Spending more time listening than filming\, James enlists Kafi and Carl as producers of the film. Five years on\, despite many personal obstacles\, Kafi and Carl arrive at surprising new places in their lives\, and\, following their lead\, James does too. Bringing to light the foundations of systemic racism in one community that has spanned generations\, A Reckoning in Boston shows that transformation\, healing and social change begins within each of us.\n  \n“Don’t miss this powerful film that lays bare the transformative force of the humanities in our lives in these turbulent and troubling times!”\n– Cornel West

DESCRIPTION:Just in time for Valentine’s weekend\, the Free State Film Society brings you a candlelit evening of film and music amidst the beautiful ambience of the Cider Gallery. Award-winning vocalist and harpist Calvin Arsenia performs amidst the backdrop of experimental films by the legendary Maya Deren. \nHEALTH & SAFETY PROTOCOLS: \nMasks and proof of COVID-19 vaccination are required at this event. Please do not attend if you are feeling unwell at the time of the show. \nClick here to review the Lawrence Arts Center’s COVID-19 policies for ticketed events.\nFree State Film Society Subscribers can attend this event for FREE as part of their $40 year-long subscription. Known for his elaborate and ceremonious sensory concert experiences that merge jazz and electronic influences\, Calvin believes the art is in crafting the perfect moment. His music is best served live\, with sensational performances and high fashion. Arsenia’s energy and curated environments fill the often intimate spaces he performs in. Brought into 9 countries through public and private grants in less than a decade\, Arsenia builds a scene for his audience and for himself\, packed with beauty and lasting delight. \nMaya Deren \nFilm selections: At Land\, Meshes of the Afternoon\, Ritual in Transfigured Time\, The Very Eye of Night. \nDeren is one of the most important American experimental filmmakers and entrepreneurial promoters of the avant-garde from the 1940s and 50s. Deren was also a choreographer\, dancer\, film theorist\, poet\, lecturer\, writer and photographer. The function of film\, Deren believed\, was to create an experience. Each one of her films would evoke new conclusions\, lending her focus to be dynamic and always-evolving. She combined her interests in dance\, Haitian Vodou and subjective psychology in a series of surreal\, perceptual\, black and white short films. Using editing\, multiple exposures\, jump cutting\, superimposition\, slow-motion and other camera techniques to her fullest advantage\, Deren creates continued motion through discontinued space\, while abandoning the established notions of physical space and time\, with the ability to turn her vision into a stream of consciousness.
