SUMMARY:Makaya McCraven - MUSIC
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE ARTIST\nMakaya McCraven is a prolific drummer\, composer and producer. \nHis newest album\, In These Times\, is the triumphant finale of a project 7+ years in the making. It’s a preeminent addition to his already-acclaimed and extensive discography\, and it’s the album he’s been trying to make since he started making records. \nMcCraven believes that the word “jazz” is insufficient\, at best\, to describe the phenomenon we’re dealing with. The artist\, who has been aptly called a cultural synthesizer\, has a unique gift for collapsing space\, destroying borders and blending past\, present\, and future into poly-textural arrangements of post-genre\, jazz-rooted 21st century folk music. Profiled in Vice\, Rolling Stone\, the Guardian\, and NPR\, among other publications\, he and the music he makes today are at the very vanguard of that phenomenon. According to the New York Times\, “McCraven has quietly become one of the best arguments for jazz’s vitality.” The artist explained to NPR in 2019\, “I don’t think what I’m doing is necessarily that far off of the legacy of jazz that I grew up in… I think one of the things that gives it strength is that people want to argue over it. That’s a good sign. That means there’s life here.” \nPresented in partnership with Kansas Public Radio \nPre-show introduction by Jordan Malhiot of the America Jazz Museum. \nPre-game with a fun Happy Hour at Wine Dive + Kitchen (741 Massachusetts St) 4:30-6pm featuring music by Mire Pral. You might have had the opportunity to see her perform recently at Theatre Lawrence in Fiddler on the Roof. Whether Gwentessa is dancing\, acting\, singing\, choreographing or painting\, she is always on the hunt for the next creative project that she can throw herself into. Coming up next at the Arts Center\, she will be assistant directing and co-choreographing SYT’s Cabaret. In September\, she’ll be performing in LAC’s Theatre and Dance for the Very Young show\, A Tree Through Time. Gwentessa is grateful for this opportunity to work with Tristian Griffin on this thought provoking piece and hopes to explore other similar creative projects in the future.

SUMMARY:Chasing Chasing Amy - FILM
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Sav Rodgers\nRun Time: 1 hour 35 min \nScreening with: Suburban Family Classics Presents: Zach Has a Secret (5min) by Emily Anne-Fraser\nIt’s all fun and games\, until someone catches a vibe. Will Zach accept himself and live his truth? Or keep his secret for eternity. With a classic 80’s sitcom “mother/ son” talk\, Zach makes a choice. \nABOUT THE FEATURE FILM\nKevin Smith’s cult classic\, Chasing Amy\, is a movie that saved director Sav Rodger’s life as a queer kid coming of age in Kansas but it also received mixed reviews from the LGBTQIA+ community. Through candid interviews with Smith and star Joey Lauren Adams\, this thoughtful documentary is a trans coming of age love story set against the backdrop of an indie film that solidified some careers and damaged others. \n\nPresented in partnership with the University of Kansas Department of Film and Media Studies\, Lawrence Pride and the Trans Lawrence Coalition. \nQ&A with Director Sav Rodgers Moderated by KU Theatre and Dance/ KU Film and Media Studies Professor Laura Kirk!  \nSav Rodgers\, Director\nSav Rodgers’ experiences as a queer Midwesterner with a wild imagination have spurred the writing of scripts that center on highly specific\, surprising stories about LGTBQ+ people. His screenplays have been recognized by GLAAD\, Outfest\, ScreenCraft\, among others. \nNamed to Forbes 30 Under 30 in 2024\, Sav is also the Founder and Executive Director of the Transgender Film Center\, a nonprofit aiming to help trans creators bring finished films to audiences around the world.
