DESCRIPTION:Just in time for Valentine’s weekend\, the Lawrence Arts Center’s Microcinema and Free State Festival present a candlelit evening of film and music amidst the beautiful ambience of the Cider Gallery. \n7pm: Doors open. Grab a drink from the bar and enjoy a showcase of short silent films by filmmaker Germaine Dulac. \n\n7:30pm: Music performance by Julia Othmer and James T. Lundie accompanied by visual projections. \nABOUT THE MUSIC\nJulia Othmer’s piano-driven performances are mesmerizing fusions of raw power\, vocal artistry and joy. The child of refugees\, Othmer draws from a richly cultured palette of experience to inspire her intensely human yet otherworldly songs. Known for the intensity of her stage presence and dynamic performances\, Othmer is one of seven artists selected to represent the USA for Global Music Match 2021 and a 2022 Official Showcasing Artist at Folk Alliance International. Julia’s award-winning music has been featured on NPR and the BBC\, in film\, TV\, and video games. She tours internationally and has shared the stage with a range of artists including Emmylou Harris\, Sarah McLachlan\, Lisa Loeb\, The Alarm and Regina Spektor. \n\nJames Lundie is an innovative composer\, producer\, multi-instrumentalist\, videographer\, songwriter\, and designer. In collaboration with his partner Julia Othmer\, James creates inter-disciplinary\, multi-media experiences. James has composed and produced music for film\, television\, audio branding\, and international publicity campaigns. His studio recordings often feature bespoke audio equipment\, re-created vintage gear and instruments of his own recreation. \nABOUT THE FILMS\nAs one of the leading radical feminists of her day\, Germaine Dulac was editor of La Française\, the organ of the French suffragette movement. She also doubled as theater and cinema critic of the publication and became increasingly enamored with film as an art form. In 1915\, she formed a production company with her husband called Delia Film and began directing highly inventive\, small-budget pictures. Dulac emerged as a leading figure in the impressionist movement in French films. DESCRIPTION:As part of the National Evening of Science on Screen\, we are thrilled to offer a special screening of the new documentary by Werner Herzog\, Theatre of Thought\, accompanied by a preshow neuroscience presentation by the Co-Director of the University of Kansas Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center\, Dr. Jeffrey M. Burns\, MD\, MS. \n6:30pm Doors open/ 7pm Preshow Presentation/ 7:30pm Film Screening \nABOUT THE FILM\nHerzog casts his gaze on the human brain\, looking for clues as to why a piece of tissue can produce deep thoughts and feelings\, while also considering the philosophical\, ethical and social implications. Professor Yuste\, Chief Scientific Advisor of the movie\, goes on a road trip with Herzog to meet a collection of people whose cutting-edge research sounds like science fiction. They meet Jamie Daves\, Entrepreneur and Treasurer of the foundation\, and Jared Genser\, an award-winning human rights lawyer and the foundation’s General Counsel\, who warns that the international community is unprepared for the ethical implications of neurotechnology. The film is multifaceted\, illuminating the technological advances that are helping people overcome brain-related illnesses\, confronting conspiracy theories over implanted chips\, and questioning the politics of mind control. \nJeffrey M. Burns\, MD\, MS\nABOUT THE SPEAKER\nJeffrey M. Burns\, MD\, MS is the Edward H. Hashinger Professor of Medicine and the Co-Director of the University of Kansas Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (KU ADRC)\, one of 33 nationally designated centers in the country. Dr. Burns also directs the Department of Neurology’s Neurocognitive Division\, the Clinical and Translational Science Unit – Fairway\, and the KU ADRC’s Clinical Core\, which is a site for national clinical trial networks. \nDr. Burns started the Alzheimer’s clinical research program at the University of Kansas Medical Center in 2004. His education includes a BA (English and Japanese) from the University of Notre Dame\, medical school at the University of Kansas Medical Center\, neurology residency at the University of Virginia\, and a post-doctoral fellowship in Alzheimer’s at Washington University in St. Louis. He then returned to his hometown of Kansas City to start the Alzheimer’s clinical program to stimulate and support AD and aging research locally while pursuing research investigating how various lifestyle factors influence brain aging and AD. The program has grown into a vibrant research and training environment for AD and brain aging research. Dr. Burns has been continuously funded as a PI by the NIH since 2005 for work focused on how various lifestyle factors influence brain aging and AD progression. \nABOUT THE TALK\nTheatre of Thought: Big Plans for Brains\nTechnological advancements have brought a new era for Alzheimer’s Disease diagnostics and treatment. Explore innovative new research in the memory centers of the human brain\, including how exercise\, nutrition and metabolism relate to dementia\, in this pre-show presentation by neuroscientist Dr. Jeffrey Burns\, co-founder of the KU Alzheimer’s Disease Center. \nThis event is supported by Science on Screen®\, an initiative of the Coolidge Corner Theatre\, with major support from the Alfred P. The Lakota Native comedian was also a writer on both seasons. Currently\, Jana is developing Bonnie for CBS which she is also set to star in. Jana was a fan favorite on FX’s Reservation Dogs and voiced “Zelda Fox” on Fox’s animated sitcom\, The Great North. She has been featured in various publications including New York Magazine’s Vulture\, NPR\, Paste\, Bustle\, Bon Appétit\, and Vanity Fair\, where she describes her trajectory from struggling artist to a co-lead role in her op-ed\, “Jana Schmieding on the Native Joy of Rutherford Falls.” \nJana performed improv\, sketch\, and solo comedy in New York City for ten years before moving to Los Angeles. She directed over 30 sketch and solo shows and collaborated in several indie writers’ rooms. DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE ARTIST\nMakaya McCraven is a prolific drummer\, composer and producer. \nHis newest album\, In These Times\, is the triumphant finale of a project 7+ years in the making. It’s a preeminent addition to his already-acclaimed and extensive discography\, and it’s the album he’s been trying to make since he started making records. \nMcCraven believes that the word “jazz” is insufficient\, at best\, to describe the phenomenon we’re dealing with. The artist\, who has been aptly called a cultural synthesizer\, has a unique gift for collapsing space\, destroying borders and blending past\, present\, and future into poly-textural arrangements of post-genre\, jazz-rooted 21st century folk music. Profiled in Vice\, Rolling Stone\, the Guardian\, and NPR\, among other publications\, he and the music he makes today are at the very vanguard of that phenomenon. According to the New York Times\, “McCraven has quietly become one of the best arguments for jazz’s vitality.” The artist explained to NPR in 2019\, “I don’t think what I’m doing is necessarily that far off of the legacy of jazz that I grew up in… I think one of the things that gives it strength is that people want to argue over it. That’s a good sign. More than just a cautionary tale about misused technology and the toxicity of the online world\, this documentary transforms the deepfake technology weaponized against Taylor into a tool that allows her to tell her story and reclaim her identity.  \nABOUT THE SPEAKER\nDavid is a PhD candidate in Philosophy\, studying normative theories of judicial decision-making and issues related to emerging technologies and privacy. Additionally\, he also runs a public humanities/ philosophy initiative called Lawrence Talks. Through Lawrence Talks\, David hopes to bridge the lived experiences of local community members with the theoretical research of KU scholars to issues relevant to the community. DESCRIPTION:Shot in 1920 in the Wichita Mountains of southwest Oklahoma with a cast entirely made up of members of the Comanche and Kiowa tribes\, this silent film was directed by Norbert A. Myles and screened publicly only twice before disappearing without a trace for nearly a century. The Indigenous actors\, who in 1920 had been living on reservations for less than sixty years\, brought their own tipis\, horses\, clothing\, and material culture with them.  \nFilmmaker Tweesna Rose Mills presents a revisionist take on the film\, interweaving original footage with new imagery and soundscapes to invite viewers to experience the work through a modern lens. \nLive audio description by Audio-Reader Network \nPresented in partnership with the Spencer Museum of Art

As a part of the LGBTQ+ community and a descendant of the Mescalero Apache Tribe\, she is known for her unwavering commitment to inclusive storytelling. With a career spanning over a decade in the film industry\, Candice has become a pivotal figure in bringing to light the nuanced narratives of underrepresented communities. Her work\, characterized by its depth\, authenticity\, and innovative approach\, aims not only to entertain but to provoke thought and foster understanding across diverse audiences. She is also Co-Owner of Deer Woman Productions which is a nonprofit Native/women run production company. \nRebekka Schlichting\nAn enrolled member of the Ioway Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska\, Rebekka Schlichting is a filmmaker and co-owner of Deer Woman Productions. In 2023\, she directed\, produced and wrote the documentary Seed Warriors\, which broadcasts on Nebraska Stories and PBS Digital Studios. Rebekka is also an assistant professor of the practice at the University of Kansas William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications where she teaches writing\, ethics\, and a variety of video classes. She co-directs the KU School of Journalism summer Native Storytelling Workshop for Native American high school students. She serves on the Lawrence Arts and Culture Commission\, the Ioway Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska Culture Committee and heads the Ioway Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska Annual Powwow.

With choreography and dance by Tristian Griffin\, dancer Gwentessa Alfie\, art by Justin Canja\, music by Alex Kimball Williams\, lighting design by Ann Sitzman and video projections by Peter Jasso\, this multidisciplinary piece brings this 1930 film off the screen and into the realm of live experience for a one night only presentation. \nThis event is presented in partnership with the Spencer Museum of Art. \nTristian Griffin\, Choreographer and Dancer\nA native of Kansas City\, Tristian Griffin graduated from Texas Christian University in Ballet and a minor in English. While at TCU\, his choreography was selected to participate in American Dance College Association’s regional conference and a semi-finalist for nationals. Following graduation\, Tristian began his professional career and danced with Garth Fagan Dance Company\, Wylliams-Henry Contemporary Dance Company\, the Metropolitan Opera House (NYC)\, and Springboard Danse Montreal. In 2019\, Tristian reconnected with his passion for choreography by starting his dance company\, Tristian Griffin Dance Company. His company has performed in Kansas City\, Lawrence KS\, Newport RI\, Philadelphia PA\, St. Louis MO\, Kalamazoo MI\, and San Diego CA. TGDC has appeared at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art\, Charlotte Street Foundation\, Newport Dance Festival\, Kemper Contemporary Museum\, and International Dance Festival. As a choreographer\, Tristian has been commissioned by over 15 professional companies\, universities\, art galleries\, and pre-professional institutions. His most recent commissions include Kennesaw University\, Newport Contemporary Ballet (Island Moving Company)\, Peabody Institute of The John Hopkins University\, Wylliams-Henry Contemporary Dance Company\, Malashock Dance Company\, and the University of Kansas. Most recently\, he taught full-time as a visiting professor of practice at the University of Kansas and a guest teaching artist at the University of Missouri Kansas City. From 2019 to 2023\, he was awarded artist-in-residence at Lawrence Arts Center. Tristian is a recipient of the Ann & Weston Hicks Choreography Fellowship. In 2024\, he will pursue his MFA at Duke University\, studying Dance in Composition with an emphasis on African and African-American Studies. \nJustin Canja\, Artist\nJustin Canja is a visual artist who moved to the Midwest from the greater Washington D.C. metro area at the start of 2019. His artworks focus on sociopolitical topics by the means of painting\, collage\, murals and installation. He describes current events and juxtaposse them with points in history with the attempt to link the physical and metaphysical through exaggerated  gestural expression and the emotional connectedness through found objects. Using ironic humor in combination with light hearted color combinations\, he grabs the attention of the onlooker by striking first impression. Justin’s residency at the Interurban Arthouse revolves around identity and the human condition. \nAlex Kimball Williams\, Musician\nAlex Kimball Williams is a multicultural artivist (artist + activist)\, musician\, writer\, & community organizer. Their work focuses on ethnopolitics\, medical activism\, & environmentalism. They received the 2018 MLK Dreamer’s award & 3rd place Community Leader/Hero (Racial Justice/Equity Issues) on Best of Lawrence 2021. Kimball Williams co-founded B.L.A.C.K. Lawrence (Black Literature & Arts Collective of Kansas). \nPeter Jasso\, Projection Design\nPeter Jasso graduated from USC’s School of Cinema-Television with a degree in Film/ Video Production. He taught at the New York Film Academy’s Los Angeles office and worked in development at American Zoetrope and Esparza-Katz and served as the Director of the Kansas Film Commission\, the Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission and the COO of CACHE . He is an alumnus of Film Independent’s Project Involve Mentorship program\, a recipient of the Mana de Topeka award and was an appointed member of the Kansas State Office of Hispanic Affairs. \nAnn Sitzman\, Lighting Designer\nAnn Sitzman (she/her) is the Technical Coordinator and a lecturer for KU’s Department of Theatre & Dance. She previously designed lights for the University Theatre productions of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street\, Cabaret\, Measure for Measure\, Head Over Heels\, A Midsummer Night’s Dream\, Spring Awakening\, Company\, and Picnic.  She also has designed lights for the University Dance Company and KU Opera.  She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts at KU and Master’s in Lighting Design from SUNY Purchase College in New York. She spent a few years working Off Broadway on shows including Woody Harrelson’s Bullet for Adolf with Jen Schriever and On the Head of a Pin with Zach Pizza at 59E59. Since returning to Kansas City in 2013\, she has worked as assistant lighting designer for David Grill and Kirk Bookman at the Kansas City Ballet and lighting designer/production electrician for Harvest Productions. \n \nGwentessa Alfie is a local performer\, raised right here\, at the Lawrence Arts Center! You might have had the opportunity to see her perform recently at Theatre Lawrence in Fiddler on the Roof. Whether Gwentessa is dancing\, acting\, singing\, choreographing or painting\, she is always on the hunt for the next creative project that she can throw herself into. Coming up next at the Arts Center\, she will be assistant directing and co-choreographing SYT’s Cabaret. In September\, she’ll be performing in LAC’s Theatre and Dance for the Very Young show\, A Tree Through Time.
