SUMMARY:An Evening with BLKBOK
DESCRIPTION:Live concert with neo-classical pianist BLKBOK! \nPOST-SHOW: Artist Q&A \nPresented in partnership with Kansas Public Radio. \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nBLKBOK (born Charles Wilson III)\, grew up in a music-filled house in Detroit’s inner-city. By the time he was 8\, he was an acclaimed piano prodigy\, winning statewide accolades and college-level competitions. When it came to music\, most of the kids he grew up with pursued hip-hop and adopted rap names. It is no coincidence that Charles chose the name BLKBOK\, which echoes that of one of the greatest pianists and composers of all time. The tag is also an apt reflection of the elements that have contributed to the artist’s identity and symbolizes his colorful journey from pop and hip-hop culture to his critically acclaimed\, neo-classical debut album Black Book\, and various Mixtape projects and collaborations. \nBLKBOK’s live\, high-energy performance is culturally reflective and seeks to entertain with a live piano based performance like none you have ever seen before. BLKBOK’s vision is to illuminate awareness for all\, encouraging dialogue and counterpoint in the way we perceive ourselves and the world we live in together. \n\n  \n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nView this post on Instagram\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nA post shared by BLKBOK (@blkbok)

SUMMARY:We Were Famous\, You Don’t Remember: The Embarrassment
DESCRIPTION:Film Screening\, Q&A and Concert! \nDirected by Daniel Szlauderbach and Daniel Fetherston\nRUN TIME: 1 hour 36 min\nPRE-SHOW: Hartung: Not For Sale short film by Patrick Troll (9 min)\nPOST-SHOW: Filmmaker Q&A and reunion concert by The Embarrassment\n \nQ&A Participants:\nDanny Szlauderbach (Co-director)\nBill Goffrier (Guitar)\nJohn Nichols (Vocals)\nDan Rouser (Manager)\nJon Niccum\, Moderator (Music/film journalist\, KU Film and Media Studies Professor) \nPresented in partnership with KJHK. \nABOUT THE FILM:\nSurrounded by wheat fields\, cowboys\, and cars\, four bespectacled misfits in Kansas — Bill Goffrier\, Brent Giessmann\, John Nichols\, and Ron Klaus — grabbed instruments and blasted out “a ravenous strain of rock ‘n’ roll” as tuneful\, brainy\, and enthralling as anything coming from the coasts. They worshiped the Stooges and witnessed the Sex Pistols bring punk to the Great Plains\, igniting within them an uncontrolled prairie fire to do-it-themselves. As the Embarrassment\, they threw a house-wrecking party and invited “a thousand loving friends” into their secret world of “weirdo new wave freaks” in Wichita\, Lawrence\, and beyond. They played Chicago\, D.C.\, and New York\, drawing the attention of influential figures like Allen Ginsberg\, John Cale\, and Jonathan Demme — but their independence and refusal to sell out sparked tension within the group and kept mainstream success at bay. Through original interviews\, restored concert footage\, and appearances by fans including Evan Dando\, Freedy Johnston\, Grant Hart\, and Thomas Frank\, this documentary shows how the Embarrassment rose out of nowhere to become a post-punk legend that’s almost been forgotten — until now. \nABOUT THE SHORT:\nHartung: Not for Sale \nProfile of Mike Hartung\, an outsider artist in Lindsborg\, Kansas whose work shines light on the beauty in grotesque spaces.“I am disrupting my peaceful retirement by still painting\,” he says in the film. \n\nPhoto by Drew Davis. SUMMARY:ᏓᏗᏬᏂᏏ (We Will Speak)
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Schon Duncan and Michael McDermit\nRUN TIME: 1 hour 35 min\nPRE-SHOW: Seed Warriors short film by Rebekka Schlicting (11min)\nPOST-SHOW: Filmmaker Q&A\, Refreshments by Jason The Native Chef and music by Agalisiga “Chuj” Mackey\n \nThe Cherokee language is deeply tied to Cherokee identity; yet generations of assimilation efforts by the U.S. government and anti-Indigenous stigmas have forced the Tri-Council of Cherokee tribes to declare a State of Emergency for the language in 2019. While there are 430\,000 Cherokee citizens in the three federally recognized tribes\, fewer than an estimated 2\,000 fluent speakers remain—the majority of whom are elderly. The COVID pandemic has unfortunately hastened the course. Language activists\, artists\, and the youth must now lead the charge of urgent radical revitalization efforts to help save the language from the brink of extinction. \nABOUT THE SHORT:\nSeed Warriors\nA group of seed keepers work to regain food sovereignty in their ancestral homelands of Nebraska. By reclaiming their sacred corn seeds\, they seek to return to the healthy\, traditional lifeways of the Pawnee people. \nABOUT THE MUSIC:\nAgalisiga “Chuj” Mackey is a Cherokee guitarist/musician and singer/songwriter from the Cherokee Nation in Northeast Oklahoma. Chuj spent the early years of his life growing up on a creek bank in the small traditional Cherokee community of Kenwood\, where his mother’s family settled after the forced removal of Cherokees from what is now North Carolina. Chuj then moved to Tahelquah\, the Cherokee Nation capital\, to become a language learner at the Cherokee Immersion Charter School. Chuj grew up participating in traditional ceremonies\, ceremonial songs being the foundation of his voice which he carries with him as he creates more modern music. Chuj writes and sings original country-folk music in the Cherokee language and performs old country classics. He aims to inspire other Indigenous peoples to make art in their languages so he eventually won’t have to. \n\nAgalisiga “Chuj” Mackey

SUMMARY:Body and Soul with live score by DJ Spooky + Audio Description
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Oscar Micheaux\nRUN TIME: 1 hour 33 min\nPRE-SHOW: Robert & Billie short film by Robert Brogden\nMID-SHOW: Short Film Q&A and DJ Spooky Introduction \nDJ Spooky performs an original live score created for this masterpiece of the silent screen era\, written\, directed\, and produced by prolific director Oscar Micheaux! \nThis event will feature live audio description by Audio-Reader Network.\nPresented in partnership with KJHK. \nABOUT THE FILM:\nIn this good versus bad twin melodrama\, Robeson plays both an escaped convict posing as a minister\, and the convict’s honest\, yet penniless brother. It is estimated that Micheaux\, who was the first African American to produce a feature length film\, wrote\, produced\, and directed more than 40 films from 1919 to 1948. His movies\, known as “race” films\, were made by Black filmmakers\, featured an all-Black cast\, and were intended for Black audiences. SUMMARY:Makaya McCraven - MUSIC
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE ARTIST\nMakaya McCraven is a prolific drummer\, composer and producer. \nHis newest album\, In These Times\, is the triumphant finale of a project 7+ years in the making. It’s a preeminent addition to his already-acclaimed and extensive discography\, and it’s the album he’s been trying to make since he started making records. \nMcCraven believes that the word “jazz” is insufficient\, at best\, to describe the phenomenon we’re dealing with. The artist\, who has been aptly called a cultural synthesizer\, has a unique gift for collapsing space\, destroying borders and blending past\, present\, and future into poly-textural arrangements of post-genre\, jazz-rooted 21st century folk music. Profiled in Vice\, Rolling Stone\, the Guardian\, and NPR\, among other publications\, he and the music he makes today are at the very vanguard of that phenomenon. According to the New York Times\, “McCraven has quietly become one of the best arguments for jazz’s vitality.” The artist explained to NPR in 2019\, “I don’t think what I’m doing is necessarily that far off of the legacy of jazz that I grew up in… I think one of the things that gives it strength is that people want to argue over it. That’s a good sign. That means there’s life here.” \nPresented in partnership with Kansas Public Radio \nPre-show introduction by Jordan Malhiot of the America Jazz Museum. \nPre-game with a fun Happy Hour at Wine Dive + Kitchen (741 Massachusetts St) 4:30-6pm featuring music by Mire Pral.
