SUMMARY:ART // slickly across the surface [of]\, [our] sensitive signals. Benjamin Rosenthal
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition will include Rosenthal’s newest works. Currently one of the 2017-2018 artists-in-residence at the Charlotte Street Foundation in Kansas City\, Rosenthal is Assistant Professor of Expanded Media in the Department of Visual Art at the University of Kansas. He holds an MFA in Art Studio from the University of California\, Davis\, and a BFA in Art (Electronic Time-Based Media) from Carnegie Mellon University. His work pulls from a variety of fields in the humanities and sciences\, and questions the authenticity of our physical experience in an age where the boundaries between reality and the virtual become indistinguishable.

SUMMARY:ART // Casey Whittier. Every Corner: A Confessional
DESCRIPTION:Casey Whittier’s work is informed by her fascination with cast-off objects and quiet spaces: the things stuck in the corner\, at the bottom of the pile. Her interest lies in an object’s ability to catalyze a story\, to conjure up associations: past\, present\, future\, real\, fictional\, or in-between. The works in this exhibition are culled from the everyday\, straddling the line between humorous and serious. Complicated\, as many stories are\, they hold a certain tension within them: at once\, ceramic oars and earbuds can be seen as symbols of a desire to escape while simultaneously acknowledging\, through material and presentation\, that what they stand for is rife with contradiction\, designed to fail. A backpack allows one to carry more than their hands can handle but\, consequently\, places the burden squarely on the shoulders\, a metaphor for responsibility.

SUMMARY:ART // Flower Matrix. Claudia Hart
DESCRIPTION:Hart’s decorative patterns are in fact also computer codes – augmented “tags” functioning like QR – that permit users to see her fantastical animations embedded in them through Hart’s Looking Glass augmented app. Through the Looking Glass\, one can glimpse a world of pulsing invisible flowers covered with animated graphics culled from Internet signage\, computer code\, and emoji graphics. Programmed by the artist\, her multimedia craft objects are metaphors that unfold\, using computer-vision to reveal “magical” layers of new information. \nWallpaper and ceramic tiles were specifically created as décor for a new kind of “virtual-reality” lounge\, a seductive environment made for viewing Hart’s Flower Matrix VR world. She is building another liminal space\, but this one in the real world where one might don VR goggles and view her parallel VR one: a mixed reality fantastical architecture that randomly grows and decays using an esthetic of fakeness where technology has replaced nature\, both sugary sweet and chemically toxic in equal measures. \nArtwork courtesy of bitforms gallery\, NYC

SUMMARY:ART // Nineteen Eighty-Four. Rafael Lozano-Hemmer
DESCRIPTION:“Nineteen Eighty-Four\,” is an interactive display that shows house address numbers extracted from Google Street View images. The numbers have an immense variety of fonts\, colors\, textures and styles\, as they were scanned by Google from the front doors of buildings from all over the World. The display writes over 22 billion different combinations of the number 1984; these combinations change automatically at a speed that can be set using a dial\, from one different image every ten seconds to ten images per second. At the default speed\, it will take around 1\,000 years for the same combination of images to be repeated. Typing any number onto an onboard animated keyboard starts a fast count-down or count-up until eventually the number 1984 is reached. At that point\, the display resumes cycling through different combinations of images to make variations on 1984. \nAbout the Artist \n \nRafael Lozano-Hemmer was born in Mexico City in 1967. In 1989 he received a B.Sc. in Physical Chemistry from Concordia University in Montréal\, Canada. He has had solo exhibitions in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\, the MUAC Museum in Mexico City\, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney. Rafael was the first artist to officially represent Mexico at the Venice Biennale. He has received two BAFTA British Academy Awards for Interactive Art in London\, a Golden Nica at the Prix Ars Electronica in Austria\, the “Artist of the year” Rave Award from Wired Magazine\, and a Rockefeller fellowship.

SUMMARY:ART // Zero Noon. Rafael Lozano-Hemmer
DESCRIPTION:“Zero Noon” is a digital clock that shows the current time according to eccentric metrics: it uses hundreds of different reference systems. The clock’s statistics are all synchronized so that precisely at noon they all zero and start over. For example\, the clock can tell the time based on the average number of daily financial transactions in Brazil\, or the average daily amount of cookies sold by girl scouts\, or the number of animal species that become extinct per day\, or the daily average number of breaths that a typical human takes\, and so on. Basically\, Zero Noon is a clock that is run by internet-refreshed statistics. At noon automatically a new metric is displayed in a different color chosen from a determined palette. The public may also change the statistics by manually scrolling through the list using small push-buttons under the built-in display. \nAbout the Artist \n \nRafael Lozano-Hemmer was born in Mexico City in 1967. In 1989 he received a B.Sc. in Physical Chemistry from Concordia University in Montréal\, Canada. SUMMARY:ART // The Pleiades Project: To the Stars Through Collaboration
DESCRIPTION:The Pleiades Project is an international collaboration of seven artists creating multidisciplinary artwork based on the Pleiades Star Cluster. The collaborating artists are Diana Dunkley\, Debra Nelson\, Nan Renbarger\, and Margaret Rose of Kansas\, USA and Australians Estelle Anderson and Peta Milne from the Australian Capital Territory and Lois Denham from Central Goldfields Victoria. The Pleiades Project began in August of 2014 and\, as yet\, has no ending date. \nThe Pleiades Project artists have created an interactive collaborative installation that is a multi-leveled exploration of the Pleiades. This inquiry informs collaborative and personal creative investigation\, delving into the historical and personal myths\, science\, history\, and visual characteristics of this culture-bridging star cluster. The installation incorporates seven modular components\, each initially created by one artist independently\, that are woven into the final installation by all seven artists. The exhibit also features a video that includes each artist’s statement about the work and the collaboration and also includes videos and photos of several of the projects completed over the years of the collaboration

SUMMARY:IDEAS // Up in Art: An Art Talk with Cheech Marin
DESCRIPTION:To kick off Free State Festival 2018\, Cheech Marin will talk about the history of Chicano art and his journey in\, and passion for\, art collecting.  \n“Chicano art is American art. My goal is to bring the term ‘Chicano’ to the forefront of the art world.” \n– Cheech Marin \nBest known as one half of the hilariously irreverent\, satirical\, counter-culture\, no-holds-barred duo Cheech and Chong\, Cheech Marin is an actor\, director\, writer\, musician\, art collector\, and humanitarian. Exhibitions drawn from the Cheech Marin Collection have toured more than 50 major art museums across the United States. Furthering his goal to introduce Chicano art to a wider audience\, Marin has entered a partnership with the City of Riverside and Riverside Art Museum to create The Marin Center for Chicano Art\, Culture\, and Industry slated to open in 2020.

SUMMARY:ART // Johanna Winters: The Middle Tell
DESCRIPTION:The Middle Tell is a shadow-puppet performance created by Johanna Winters chronicling a trio of female bards as they reluctantly surrender to a deteriorating condition. These middle women reveal their story through a muted language of hinging limbs and dousing light. Suspended in a time that is both passing and returning\, sustaining and releasing\, the middle women hover in a state of hesitation between undoing their youth and summoning the process of aging. They are neither bitter nor tolerant of their inevitable decline – they tepidly hinge against and toward it. \nPuppeteering assistance from Olivia Hernández\, Alicia Kelly\, and Anne Luben. Music and sound design by Jeff Stolz.\n\n\nJohanna Winters\n\nJohanna Winters is the current Printmaking Artist-in-Residence at the Lawrence Arts Center. Johanna received her MFA from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville\, and was the 2017-18 recipient of the University of Tennessee College of Arts and Sciences Thomas Fellowship. She has taught printmaking as an Associate Lecturer at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay\, and recently completed a residency at the Eugeniusz Geppert Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław\, Poland. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.

SUMMARY:FILM // The Big Bad Fox and Other Tales
DESCRIPTION:From the creators of the Academy Award-nominated Ernest & Celestine comes another hilarious\, heartwarming tale of animal misfits destined to become a classic. Directors Benjamin Renner and Patrick Imbert adapt Renner’s own acclaimed graphic novel into a delirious\, delightful triptych of interlocking stories\, with a pacing and visual spontaneity that harkens back to classic Looney Tunes shorts and slapstick two-reelers. But underneath the gags (and there are plenty of them)\, the three stories offer a sensitive and beautiful portrayal of family and the anxieties of modern life.

SUMMARY:ART // Synthesizer Performance. Luke DuBois
DESCRIPTION:Using the Lawrence Public Library’s custom modular analog synthesizer\, avant-garde electronic performer Luke DuBois will perform live.  This performance will be a unique opportunity for the community to see this instrument being used. The modular synthesizer is a type of synthesizer\, which exists in both physical and virtual forms\, consisting of separate specialized modules.
