DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event has SOLD OUT.  \nCLICK HERE to join the waitlist! \nIn celebration of the Lawrence Public Library’s Booktoberfest\, Free State Festival and the Lawrence Arts Center Microcinema are proud to present a screening of the 1972 film Blacula in the haunted halls of 10th and Mass Studios. \nBooktoberfest is the Lawrence Public Library’s biggest event of the year for adult readers. Brought together by a shared love of reading\, the community reads a book together and explore its themes through a variety of thought-provoking events. This year’s book selection is Bram Stoker’s Dracula and this film screening will add to the conversation with special guest Giselle Anatol\, Executive Director of the Gunn Center for Science Fiction (and self-proclaimed vampire lore aficionado)\, in attendance for a post-screening discussion. \nABOUT THE FILM\nDuring a visit to Transylvania\, an African prince gets turned into a vampire by Count Dracula. Sealed in a coffin for several lifetimes\, Blacula reawakens in 1970s Los Angeles. DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE FILM\nAnnabel Hernandez\, a young woman with Down syndrome\, shares her love of performing and her unique perspective on life. This short film is an experiment in how the documentary genre can better\, and more authentically\, represent individuals who have intellectual disabilities as well as the diversity and vibrancy of a community that is often overlooked. \nFilm run time: 20 minutes \nPost-screening Q&A with Director/Director of Photography Ida Joglar and Co-writer/Producer Amity Hoffman will be moderated by Kansas Creative Arts Industries Commission Accessibility Specialist Christie Scanlin Dobson\, PhD. \nThis free screening takes place in the Lawrence Arts Center Large Gallery amongst the exhibit In This Body\, I Persevere featuring work from twelve BIPOC artists from around the country. The gallery is located on the main floor of the Arts Center and is wheelchair accessible. DESCRIPTION:In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness month\, the Lawrence Arts Center Microcinema is teaming up with the Willow Domestic Violence Center for an interactive screening of Weird Science. A panel of entertaining experts delve into the 1980’s film’s scientific missteps\, toxic masculinity\, and unhealthy relationships with a live panel of experts. Those new to the John Hughes classic will enjoy this concoction of equal parts laughter and cringe while gaining new perspectives. \nThis event is supported by Science on Screen®\, an initiative of the Coolidge Corner Theatre\, with major support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. \nABOUT THE FILM\nTwo unpopular teenagers\, Gary Wallace and Wyatt Donnelly\, fail at all attempts to be accepted by their peers.
