Returning the Muse: Kirsten Paludan Honors Janis Ian at Free State Fest

By Sofia Lamento, Free State Festival Contributor

Kirsten Paludan wears many hats. She is a vocalist, actress, educator and champion of community creativity. This year at the Free State Festival, she brings all of those roles together in a one-night-only tribute to legendary singer-songwriter Janis Ian.

Inspired by Ian’s Between the Lines album, the performance is set in the Lawrence Arts Center gallery and features an all-star lineup of local musicians, including Paludan’s sister Carrie, a professional opera singer. Together, they’ll reimagine Ian’s powerful lyrics and harmonies with a fresh, genre-bending twist.

Paludan calls it “returning the muse,” a phrase passed down from her artist parents that reflects her deep love for Lawrence and its creative community. “You give back to, you know, your community,” she says.

The show promises soul, storytelling, and surprises, and yes, there will be a few unexpected moments on stage (you’ll have to come to find out).

Catch Kirsten’s Janis Ian tribute at the Free State Festival, June 2025 at the Lawrence Arts Center.
