Casey Whittier’s work is informed by her fascination with cast-off objects and quiet spaces: the things stuck in the corner, at the bottom of the pile. Her interest lies in an object’s ability to catalyze a story, to conjure up associations: past, present, future, real, fictional, or in-between. The works in this exhibition are culled from the everyday, straddling the line between humorous and serious. Complicated, as many stories are, they hold a certain tension within them: at once, ceramic oars and earbuds can be seen as symbols of a desire to escape while simultaneously acknowledging, through material and presentation, that what they stand for is rife with contradiction, designed to fail. A backpack allows one to carry more than their hands can handle but, consequently, places the burden squarely on the shoulders, a metaphor for responsibility.
