Presented by the Lawrence Journal-World and hosted by the Watkins Museum of History.
Panelists
Chad Lawhorn
Chad Lawhorn is the editor of the Lawrence Journal-World and the author of the popular Town Talk Blog. Prior to becoming editor in 2015, he was a reporter covering business news and city government for the newspaper. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the Burton W. Marvin Kansas News Enterprise Award in 2015 and the Kansas Press Association’s Clyde M. Reed Master Editor Award in 2017. He is a graduate of the University of Kansas.
Tim Carpenter
Carpenter is the Statehouse Bureau Chief and Special Projects Reporter at the Topeka Capital-Journal. He is a six-time recipient of the Kansas Press Association’s Victor Murdock Award and has twice been named Journalist of the Year by The Kansas City Press Club. He is a graduate of Kansas State University.
Dena Sattler
Sattler is the editor and publisher of the Garden City Telegram and serves as group publisher for Southwest Kansas for Gatehouse Media. In 2017, Sattler won the “Editorial Writer of the Year” competition among GateHouse Media’s 600 publications across the United States. She is a past president of the Kansas Press Association and currently serves as the association’s legislative liaison. She is a graduate of the University of Iowa.
Dave Helling
Helling is an editorial writer and columnist at the Kansas City Star. In addition to his work at the Star, his media career includes stints with television and radio stations in Kansas City, Wichita and Hastings, Nebraska. He is the recipient of the 2018 American Society of Newspaper Editors Burl Osborne Award for Editorial Leadership for a series of editorials about the secretive process used to award the contract for a new terminal at Kansas City International Airport. He is a graduate of Creighton University.
Moderator
Rob Karwath is a journalism instructor in the William Allen White School of Journalism at the University of Kansas. He also serves as the general manager of the University Daily Kansan. He has an undergraduate degree in journalism from the University of Kansas and an MBA from the University of Chicago.
